In 1947, when the area code system was introduced to Ohio, the state was assigned 216, 419, 513 and 614. 1996 brought about 330 and 937 as splits. In 1998, 440 and 740 were added, also as splits. 234 and 567 were added in 2000 as overlays. Currently, there are 10 area codes for the state of Ohio. 380 will cover the Columbus/Central Ohio area in the future. 283 will cover the Cincinnati region when the area code of 513 is depleted.

937: Southwestern part of Ohio including Springfield, Dayton, public parts of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, and areas north of Cincinnati (September 28, 1996)

Ohio had 11,542,645 residents as of 2009, with an increase of 1.7% from 2000 to 2009. 6.4% were children under 5 years of age in 2009, when the survey was last taken. 23.5% were under 18 in 2009. 13.9% were age 65 and over during the same year. 51.2% of the population was female in 2009. 84.7% of the population was white in the same year, while 12.1% was black, 1.6% was Asian and 2.8% was Hispanic. 3.0% were foreign-born in 2009. 6.1% were over the age of 5 in 2000 and did not speak English at home. 83.0% were high school graduates over 25 as of the year 2000. 21.1% had a Bachelor’s degree or higher in the year 2000, and were over age 25. 1,909,489 had a disability and were over 5 years old as of 2000. There were 4,445,773 households in 2000 and there were 2.49 persons per household. The median household income as of 2008 was $48,011. 13.3% were living below the poverty level in 2008. This is all according to the United States Census Bureau.

As of November 15, 2010, there were 51, 082 inmates in the Ohio Department of Corrections. Males totaled 47,128, while females numbered 3,954.
